Former world-title contender to fight Lorenzo Di Giacomo
After a break of almost two years, the former European Champion Mads Larsen is going to return inside the ring. On June 2 in Herning (Denmark), he will face off with Italian Lorenzo Di Giacomo, which should be quite a challenge for him.
When speaking about his absence from the sport for such a long time the super-middleweight revealed: "I suffered a torn biceps and a broken elbow back then." The repeated build-up in training after such a long interruption is pretty hard for the Dane, who already challenged Sven Ottke for his world championship back in 2003. "It is very tough to establish my former level of performance but I am feeling better to make it there day to day."
Larsen, who is currently training under the tutelage of Ulli Wegner and Georg Bramowski, has his own opinion about his coaching staff: "I really admire both of them. I have not had the pleasure before to meet such passionate people in the sport of boxing. Normally you enjoy your pension with 70 years of age but not so Herr Wegner. I truly like these two - despite their gruelling training regime." Georg Bramowski will be in the Viking its corner come June 2.
Currently Larsen lives out of his suitcase but as soon as he finds a proper apartment he will enjoy cooking as a major spare time activity. Although he misses the closeness of his family and especially his son, he subordinates everything to be successful.
At age 39, Mads Larsen does not see himself retiring any soon. "I would not have signed a contract over multiple bouts if I would think this way," he assures. "Miracles happen all the time and maybe I am going to fight again for a title in a short."
